Yes, that’s right, because contrary to popular belief, you can go on a Maldives scuba adventure even if you’re on a somewhat tight budget. You don’t need to be a millionaire or a Hollywood star to go scuba diving in one of the world’s top dive destinations.
Go Local and Live Aboard vs Exclusive Resort
The Maldives is a republic that is made up of a collection of local islands and atolls. More than 200 of these are inhabited, and depending on the size of the island, are populated between 500 to more than 2,500 persons. Of these islands, 100 have been developed for tourism with well-developed infrastructure, ferries and terminals, guest houses, resorts, cafes and restaurants, and diving centres.
When you dive within an exclusive resort, you’re limited only to that resort and get to explore only that single island. When you take a live aboard scuba adventure, you get to live aboard a diving boat, fully stocked with supplies and scuba gear, with PADI licensed and approved diving guides, and best of all, you get to explore several local islands on an itinerary of several days.
Live Aboard is More Adventurous
When you explore more islands while living aboard your diving boat, you get to experience great natural atolls, lagoons, sand banks, and channels, and get the chance to rub elbows (well, not literally) with manta rays, whale sharks, nurse sharks, dolphins, and underwater caves. You can also get to see schools of various fish, barracudas, giant clams, colourful soft corals, various species of turtles, and even sting rays.
Just Some Minor Tips
- The Maldives is a country that is 100% Muslim so men and women should be covered up when away from beaches that allows scant clothing, because only the beaches allow for swimwear. Respect the island’s dress code.
- Have at least one pair of flip flops or sandals because sometimes the beaches, roads, and other walkways can get really hot from the sun’s heat.
- The following items are strictly prohibited to be carried around:
- Materials contrary to Islam
- Pornographic materials
- Pork products
- Spear guns
